March 21st is International Day of Forests, set aside by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

When one imagines the word forest, you might first conjure images of tropical rain forests, but there are so many more! In North America, we have the Temperate Deciduous Forest, Conifer Forest, and Bald Cypress Swamp Forest to name just a few.

Some examples of forests of Central and South America include Lowland Rainforest and high-elevation Cloud Forests. Eurasia’s vast forest expanses include northern Spruce-Fire Taiga and Deciduous Forests to the south.

Asia has Temperate Bamboo Forest, Indo-Malayan Mangrove Forest and Moist Deciduous Forest. Australia boasts Gondwanan Conifer Forests, Sclerophyll Forest and Rainforest and New Zealand’s Beach Forest.

And last, but not least – Africa’s rainforests and Madagascar’s Spiny Forest with their classic baobab trees. These are just a few of the many forest types, and we aren’t even including the more dry, open forests like oak woodlands!

Indeed, tropical rainforests are some of the most well-known and endangered. I happen to have been lucky to travel to many of them, from the steamy forests of Borneo to the cloud forests of Peru, so I have created many stories and workshops for your viewing pleasure.
