Illustrations for a Chemistry Textbook
I created over 30 digital illustrations for the textbook Organic Chemistry: An Acid-Base Approach, 2nd addition, by Michael Smith.
Website for a Bird-watching Tour Company
I did a complete redesign of the bird-watching tour company website for Paradise Birding, and continue to assist in writing the text and monthly newsletters. Since this major redesign, the company has enjoyed success; growing from primarily offering tours in the west coast to now filling an exciting range of tours to exotic locales including Honduras, Mexico, the Caribbean and Peru.
Interpretive Panels for a Stream Restoration Project
I designed and illustrated nine 2 x 3 foot interpretive panels that tell the story of the successful river restoration efforts that enabled a return of Chinook Salmon and Steelhead Trout to the watershed. They are located on Clear Creek, a major tributary to the upper Sacramento River in northern California. I also assisted in writing the interpretive text, worked with subcontracted photographers to choose the best photographs possible and oversaw production and printing of the panels. See a more detailed description of this project HERE.
Illustration and Design of a National Park Junior Ranger Book
This project for Joshua National Park in California was one of the most rewarding I’ve had and the park staff has remarked that the colorful book has greatly increased kid’s interest in the Junior Ranger program. I designed this 32 page full color book, created over 50 illustrations, assisted with text and activity creation and designed the logo. View entire book here: NPS-junior-ranger-book pdf.
Illustrations for a Freshwater Invertebrates Book
I created over 100 illustrations of freshwater invertebrates for The Bug Book, A Guide to the Identification of Common Aquatic Benthic Macroinvertebrate Families of California and Western North America. Each illustration was created by observing preserved specimens under a microscope, then creating a detailed drawing, then importing that into Adobe Illustrator and creating a digital version that could easily be scaled and placed within the family pages.

Digital Illustrations for book, Underwater Eden
Underwater Eden tells the story of the establishment in 2008 of the Phoenix Islands Protected Area in the South Pacific, where some of the world’s healthiest coral reef ecosystems remain intact. See below an illustration I created for this book. Link to description of this book on Amazon .
Illustrations for the Botanical Society of America
I designed and created 13 digital illustrations for a program developed by the Botanical Society of America that encourages and assists middle and high school students in doing student-centered plant investigations with the partnership of professional scientists. It is a free online resource for teachers that provides volunteer scientists, resources, and activities to support innovation in teaching, learning, and mentoring. See the use of my images on the Planting Science program’s website.
Design of Butano State Park’s Interpretive Center
This was my first big project way back in 1997. I created all the interpretive exhibits for Butano State Park’s new nature center in California. This included nine large panels on habitats of the park as well as display structures I built (with the help of my dear old dad, a carpenter by trade who passed away in 2011 at age 90). For the panels, I worked with the rangers to develop the interpretive message, wrote the text and silkscreened it on to the panels (my how things have changed!) and used acrylics to paint the scenes of plants, animals, and fungi of the park.
Digital Illustrations and Graphics for a Peterson Reference Guide
I created a variety of illustrations and graphics for the Peterson Reference Guide to North American Woodpeckers, written by Stephen Shunk, published in May, 2016.The book covers the ecology, natural history and fascinating structural adaptations of the 23 species of North American woodpeckers.
