The Rat (or Mouse) is the first of the repeating 12-year cycle of animals that appear in the Chinese zodiac, constituting part of the Chinese calendar system. In 2020 we celebrated the Year of the Rat, which wraps up in February.

So, in observance of the Year of the Rat, I thought I’d share with you a nature sketching workshop I taught last year on one species of rat, the Kangaroo Rat.

In this 60-minute workshop, you’ll learn some interesting facts about rodents, the rat family, and kangaroo rats in particular, followed by a step-by-step sketching demonstration.

Together, we will draw the species known as the Desert Kangaroo Rat, Dipodomys deserti, a species native to the lowest, hottest regions of the southwestern United States. This video is a recording from a live, online sketching workshop I taught in 2020.
